Affirmation Page
As part of being members of a democratic classroom, our 6th graders were tasked to pick 10 words to define themselves, their classroom, their learning and each other. These affirmations take the place of "classroom rules" -- instead of focusing on what NOT to do, students chose to focus on how they wanted to be, work and learn. The students started off with over 100 words and used a democratic process of consensus building to create the final list of 10 words.
All voices were heard and honored and each word is supported by all members of our team.

Once our list of affirmations was created, students randomly chose a word to create an Affirmation Page. Each page contained:
- the word's definition
- part of speech
- pronunciation key
- a symbol, an image and/or artwork representing the affirmation
- a famous quote
- a sentence describing how our class will strive to live up to the given affirmation.
